Wrap up of the 2014 Season

This is an appropriate time to acknowledge all the competitors, fans, officials, supporters and volunteers who have supported Baypark Speedway this season. – Thank You.
The Grand Final on April 26th drew interest from drivers all around New Zealand with entries from Christchurch, Wellington, Stratford, the greater Waikato and Auckland. The best supported class was the midgets with 27 cars registered.
The new face of Speedway is the Six Shooters and there were 23 cars on the starting list for what can be described as the equivalent to a National title for the class. 18K Laz Maszaros won a similar event last year but this year he had National Sprint Car Champion Rodney Wood and young Hamilton hot shot Daniel Thomas to contend with. Bay drivers have experienced national success already with our own Daniel Hartigen winning the Australian Wingless Sprint Car title (as Six Shooters are named across the ditch) earlier this season.
The Saloon Bay Champs attracted 24 entries with a number of Stratford and Gisborne contracted cars traveling north to try their chances at becoming the 2013 / 2014 season Saloon Bay Champ. This put pressure on the local Baypark Specialists who had to contend with a few more cars on the 8500m2 of Baypark Terracotta. Fortunately due to its size there is more racing room available at Baypark with 24 cars than at a number of other tracks with ½ the number of cars.
Drivers from Wellington and Auckland compliment the Sprint Car field with 18 of the winged warriors. Our own 1NZ Rodney Wood was joined by 3NZ Jamie McDonald who has raced enough laps at Baypark to be considered another 1 of our terracotta specialists. At 18 years old the North Island Sprint Car Champion Stephen Taylor has shown everyone how fast he can be at Baypark this season. Sometimes things do not go his way for podium finishes however he regularly ends up with fastest lap of the night even when a podium finish eludes him.
Super Saloons have had a busy season with their series and championships at various venues around NZ. Dean Waddell has sold 81M to Terry Corin and 2 other regular Baypark Supers are being driven by the crew chiefs/mechanics as a thank you for a season’s hard work from the car owners. Blair Rodgers was steering the 4M of Trevor Rodgers whilst Shane Westbury was in the drivers seat of the 71M Russell Donavan Car.
Please support of sponsors who contributed to this meeting – Colin Amrein Contractors – Midgets, BaySpeed – Six Shooters, Warehouse Cars –Saloon Bay Champs, Martin Marine Systems - Sprint Cars The Professional Touch Car Painters - Super Saloons.

The next Speedway event at Baypark is the 2014 / 2015 season Opening Night on Saturday 25th October 2014.

The Pits are open throughout the racing program so take the time to wander through and meet your favourite drivers whilst getting close to the pit action. The other opportunity to meet the drivers is the Stadium Lounge where prize giving takes place from 10.30 pm. You will find the entrance beside the food concessions just before Gate 2 exit. Access to the Pit area is also via the Stadium lounge.
Remember you can tune your mobile phones / personal listening devices to 88.1 FM where you will be able to hear the broadcasted trackside commentary.

See you there!
